Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) refers to a brain injury that happens before, during, or shortly after birth when oxygen of blood flow to the brain is reduced or stopped. Some children who were diagnosed with HIE may not have any long-term problems, others may experience mild to severe disabilities. HIE can cause developmental delay, intellectual disability, epilepsy and cerebral palsy.
